Part 1 in the quest to increasing your memory is this: better focus. If you can’t focus very well, you can’t expect your memory to be great. I myself have wasted years of my life hoping that my focus will increase and that I can get all my work done in one sitting. Only after all my research am I FINALLY able to focus for long stretches of time. This 2hr course is more than just a come study with my video, because I am explaining the 4 focus killers and what you need to do to get rid of them.

Introduction to Chapter 1 (3 mins)

Focus killer #1: vague motivation (6 mins)

  • What does motivation have anyting to do with being able to focus? We’ll take a brief look at it here, because I dedicated a whole course to it in Part 2.

Focus killer #2: food – What your brain needs in order to focus (37 mins)

  • Investigating research that shows us which foods are beneficial, which foods kill your focus and which liquids can help you achieve a calm brain

Focus killer #3: distractions – How to stop and manage distractions (54 mins)

  • We‘re taking a very close look at which distractions kill you focus and how to handle them. Is our attention span really just 9 seconds long? Does our phone have endless power over us? Which part play delayed gratification and self discipline in all that? And how do you deal with a wondering mind?  

Focus killer #4: breaks – Why taking breaks is essential to learning (28 mins)

  • We‘ll investigate how and when to take a break, what‘s effective and what isn‘t, how oxygen plays into it and why pulling an all-nighter is only ever effective in movies.

Part 2 on the way to a better memory is knowing your “why”. (Don’t get me wrong I really love the fact, that you want to learn a language!!!) But if you decide to learn a language on a whim, then your motivation to continue the course will die down very quickly. If you don’t know what exactly you want to learn and how to keep your motivation going, then your brain will NOT keep wasting energy on something you’re not really interested in. So you have to know your “why”.

Motivation Theories – What drives us to learn anything? (38 mins)

  • In order to determine our „why“ we‘ll take a look at motivation theories. We need to understand which need we‘re trying to meet in order to follow through with a language course. This chapter will help you do so.

Decision Making Process- How to make a sound decision (15 mins)

  • How do you decide which course is right for you? What goes into the decision making process? Learn the steps that lead you to making a safe decision.

Goal Setting – How NOT to overwhelm yourself (17 mins)

  • What are good goals and how do you set them? We‘ll take a close look in this chapter to guide you to set the best goals for you.

Losing or Lost Motivation? What went wrong before? (26 mins)

  • If you‘re taking a course and you‘re wondering if you should go back next week or not, we‘re talking about it here. You‘ll learn why you‘re beginning to lose motivation and why you sometimes lose it altogether. There are reasons behind it and you‘ll get to know them here.

Part 4 explains to you how our brains actually memorize information. We are taking a close look at short- and long-term memory and how a word becomes a synapse in our brain, which we call a “memory”. I will also show you plenty of exercises to help you consolidate memories and how you can retrieve them. If you decide to do these exercises, then your vocabulary will steadily grow and you will be able to speak the target language with more ease.

Introduction to Chapter 4 (6 mins)

Sensory Memory – In the blink of an eye (7 mins)

  • This is step 1 of the entire memorizing process. It‘s absolutely vital and I‘ll explain why. This step is also the connection to Part 1: Focus – an interaction of many factors to aid the memorizing process. If you go wrong here, your chances of learning new words ad phrases are slim to none. I‘ll explain why.

Short-Term Memory – Ready to record? (4 mins)

  • In this chapter I‘ll explain why drumming endless lists of vocabulary is useless and what you should do instead.

Long-Term Memory – In it for the long run (7 mins)

  • What is long term memory and which types are there? We‘ll highlight the part of  long-term memory that you can‘t influence at and the part that stores language.   

Encoding & Consolidation – How memories are made and stored in the brain (11 mins)

  • Here we learn the physical part of making a memory and how you can actually influence the entire process.

Rehearsal – Say it again (13 mins)

  • This chapter explains the strategies that are absolutely essential to memorizing new words and phrases. You will be encouraged to try out any or all strategies so you find the one that suits you best.

Retrieval – What’s that thing called again? 12 mins)

  • This is the final chapter of how memories are being made explains the best strategies to make sure your brain understands that the information you‘re working with is important and that it needs to be stored permanently.

Part 5 explains that there are many things that can go wrong in the process of memorizing, which is called “forgetting”. We take a look at the mistakes we’ve made long before we get to this stage and why our brain decides that it needs to focus all its energy on other things. There’s so much we can learn here including why we need to embrace being able to forget as well. If you know why we forget, you can avoid these mistakes and increase your memory.

Introduction to Chapter 5 (3 mins)

Hyperthymesia – What if you couldn’t forget? (8 mins)

  • While we‘re looking at forgetting aka what went wrong in the memorizing process here, I want to show you what it would be like if you couldn‘t forget anything at all! This chapter is aimed at making peace with forgetting and hopefully not be as annoyed with it anymore.

General Reasons of forgetting – What you need to look out for (11 mins)

  • This chapter is aimed at showing you theories that have been tried and tested by scientists and we all have experienced them in real life. This chapter is giving you general explanations of what can go wrong in the memorizing process.

Retrieval Problems I’ve never heard that word in my life! (6 mins)

  • We know we‘ve heard a word or a phrase before, but it just won‘t come out! That and more is what we‘ll discuss in this chapter when we‘ve studied something inefficiently and it‘s all gone (again).

Physical Problems that contribute to forgetting (9 mins)

  • Last but not least, we‘ll look at physical issues that keep us from remembering information. We‘ll briefly look at Alzheimer‘s and Dementia and then move on to the lighter topics of sleep deprivation, alcohol and much more.

Part 6: explains to you why you can’t wait to make babysteps at speaking the language. In their minds my students often constructed the perfect sentence before it was spoken. While men usually just say anything and see what happens (not all of them, of course!) many of the women in my classes hesitated a lot before they said something. (Again, not all of them, of course). So this ecourse tackles what keeps us silent and offers strategies to handle our fears of making mistakes, being laughed at or how we can handle any possible awkward silences. I’m here to support you, because I know you can do this!

Courage and Fear – The frenemies we need to understand (6 mins)

  • We‘ll take a look at the two categories that seem to be complete opposites. But they are interconnected and we’ll take a good look at them here.

Wait til I’m Perfect – The conundrum that stops you from moving forward (2 mins)

  • If you want to wait til you‘re perfect and THEN you‘ll start to speak you will not learn. It‘s as simple as that and I‘ll explain why that is.

Awkward Silence- A mouse disguised as a monster (4 mins)

  • Oh the awkward silence can be so painful to bear. We‘ll take the monster apart and make it smaller, so that you can practise new words and phrases.

Comparing Yourself – Everyone is different when they learn, even you! (6 mins)

  • When we learn a new language we are bound to compare our progress – aka what we sound like – to others. But we shouldn‘t let it ruin our progress. Learn how here.

Being Laughed at – It’s no joke! (6 mins)

  • How do you react when someone laughs at you, because your fist sentence in the target language doesn‘t sound perfect yet? This is what we‘ll look at in this chapter.   

Offending People – Do you really tho? (6 mins)

  • A very common reason for language learners to be afraid to start speaking is they don‘t want to offend anyone. But do you really? We‘ll talk about it here.

Making Mistakes. They will happen, embrace them! (7 mins)

  • If you don‘t practise the new language, because you‘re too afraid to make mistakes then this chapter is for you.

Part 7: is the last part of learning a language, it is all about how to keep up your level of proficiency. You worked so hard for it, and you don’t want to let it go again. Now what? Well, turns out, there’s research for this, too! Most articles online tell you to just keep reading books and watching movies and so on. But there’s a very clear process in our brains that happens one after the other. I’m explaining it to you, so you can adapt the process for yourself.
